About IVF Chelsea, Julian Norman-Taylor is a Gynaecologist at our IVF Fertility Clinic in London, UK

Doctor Julian Norman- Taylor was raised and educated in West London and has spent most of his career living and working in the area.

A period of time early on in his career he worked at Hammersmith Hospital with Professor Winston where this excited an interest in reproductive medicine.

There have been spells in the East End at the Royal London Hospital and one of his claims to fame is East London’s first successful ovum donation pregnancy. He has also had sabbaticals in Paris and in Hong Kong where he was part of the team that created Hong Kong’s first pregnancy with ICSI.

His degree in medicine is from Leicester University and he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In 1997 he became medical director of the Chiltern Hospital Fertility Unit which has established itself as the leading centre offering fertility treatment in Buckinghamshire.

In 1999 he joined the team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital as a consultant gynaecologist, practicing both in reproductive medicine and general gynaecology.

Mr Norman-Taylor’s interests outside medicine include Modern and Oriental Art. He can also be found amongst the crowd at Fulham Football Club every other Saturday.

In-vitro Fertilisation literally means fertilisation in a glass, i.e. fertilisation of the egg in the laboratory.

ICSI Fertility Treatment
For the couple IVF with ICSI is much the same as IVF without. The main difference is in the laboratory.

Laparoscopy Fertility Treatment
Laparoscopy is a common technique which allows the visualisation of the organs inside the abdomen. In gynaecology this will generally mean the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Fibroids and Pregnancy
A fibroid or leiomyoma is a benign tumour of the uterus. They are very common, with around 30% of women having a fibroid in their uterus by the age of forty. Clearly the vast majority of women are unaffected by the presence of these fibroids, but some woman suffer badly from them.

Where can I get help to conceive?

The first place to start is with your general practitioner. What they might do depends on their own interests and resources. But they will be interested in how long you have been hoping to conceive, and whether you have been living together for all that time. If your periods are regular and you have been trying for less than a year, you would normally be recommended to come back at 12 months.

Most specialists would prefer a referral to be made by the GP.

A good way to find a specialist in your area is through the HFEA website. The HFEA are a government body which regulates treatment. But they also list clinics by area. Also your GP might be able to help or you might even use the recommendation of friends.

You can also contact Mr Norman-Taylor.
